VMware System Requirements

OpenServer 5.0.7V may be installed on a VMware ESX 3.5, ESXi 3.5, vSphere 4.x or ESXi 4.x, or Workstation 7.x for Windows system. The underlying hardware needed to support an installation will vary depending on the applications and installation options chosen. Customers should check with VMware for hardware requirements related to running Guest Operating Systems on their VMware platform. Computer Servers and other physical hardware compatible with VMware releases can be found in the VMware Compatibility Guide.

Importation of OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware will create a Virtual Machine with the following specifications:

  • CPUs 1
  • Floppy Drives 1
  • CD/DVD Drives 1
  • Memory 256Mb (this can be increased post-import)
  • Network Adapters 1 Adapter using the AMD PCnet-PCI emulation
  • SCSI Controllers 1 SCSI Controller using the LSI SCSI emulation
  • Hard Disks 1 Virtual Disk of 8 Gbytes (includes 2Gbytes of swap)
  • Video SVGA 1024x768x64k colors VMware VESA – VBE 2.0

The VMware System you are installing on will need the following in order to run OpenServer 5.0.7V successfully:

  • A datastore with at least 8Gbytes of free disk space to hold the OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware virtual machine. Note that additional disk space can be configured for your virtual machine once the import is complete.
  • A Virtual Switch that can be used as a virtual Network Card by OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware.
  • At least 256 Mbytes of free memory. Note that the amount of memory used by your virtual machine can be increased once the import is complete.

VMware Tools

OpenServer 5.0.7V ships with the March 2010 release of the VMware Tools package. This package adds tools to improve integration between OpenServer 5.0.7V and the host VMware system.

Product Limitations

The Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) feature was not supported in Version 1.0.0 of OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware but is suported in Version 2.0.0 and later Versions. Additionally, NeTMerge 5.3, though it may be added to standard OpenServer 507, is not available or supported for OpenServer 507V and should not be installed on the virtual appliance.
