Java Technologies on SCO Platforms
SCO is a leading provider of Java implementations and Java technologies
for UNIX operating systems vendors. SCO believes in Java!
SCO holds a seat on the
Java Community Process
Executive Committee, which governs the future growth and direction of the Java language and APIs.
SCO was
reelected to another term on the Executive Committee.
SCO is a source licensee of
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
technology from Sun Microsystems, Inc., and has ported it
to SCO UNIX.
The Standard Edition includes all that is necessary to both develop and execute
Java applications, including the Java Virtual Machine, dynamic compilers, core
libraries and APIs,
and command-line development tools.
SCO is also a licensee of the Sun Java Compatibility Kit (JCK) test suite.
All SCO Java 2 Standard Edition releases pass the JCK. This shows
SCO's commitment to providing a Java implementation that is compatible
with conformant Java implementations on other platforms.
SCO currently offers
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition v. 1.4.2 implementations as follows:
Platform | How to Obtain | JVM technology |
UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.4 | pre-installed | HotSpot VM |
UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.3 UP4 | pre-installed | HotSpot VM |
SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.7 MP3 (soon) | pre-installed | HotSpot VM |
SCO currently offers
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition v. 1.3.1 implementations as follows:
Platform | How to Obtain | JVM technology |
UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.3 | pre-installed | Classic VM with JIT |
Open UNIX 8 (UnixWare 7.1.2) | download | Classic VM with JIT |
UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.1 | download | Classic VM with JIT |
SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.7 | pre-installed | Classic VM with JIT, green threads only |
SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.6 | download | Classic VM with JIT, green threads only |
As part of the porting process to SCO UNIX platforms, SCO has made
enhancements to Sun technology in various areas. Some of these are
described in product
Release Notes, while those to the performance-improving just-in-time
compiler are described in the SCO-authored paper
"The Simplest Heuristics May Be the Best in Java JIT Compilers"
(published in ACM SIGPLAN Notices,
Vol. 38, No. 2, February 2003).
Older versions of Java 2 Standard Edition v. 1.3.0,
Java 2 Standard Edition v. 1.2.2,
and the Java Development Kit v. 1.1.x are also
available (in some cases, for older releases of SCO operating systems.)
In addition, SCO offers implementations of these additional Java
technologies on most of its platforms:
Java Plug-in
for running Java applets within a browser
Java Communications API for Java serial and parallel I/O
Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) and
Java API for XML-Based RPC (JAX-RPC) for SOAP- and XML-based web services
Java Servlets and Java Server Pages
See the Products section
for more information on all of the offerings listed on this page.
You are also invited to look at the
SCOx Web Services Substrate,
which uses many of the Java technologies listed above.
It is a powerful web services-based framework that provides
the tools, applications, and infrastructure to bring about
Web access to legacy applications and databases.
Please contact SCO
if you need more information or have any questions
about SCO Java products.
