Java Technologies on SCO Systems

JavaTM Development Kit 1.1.8

JavaTM Runtime Environment 1.1.8

The JavaTM Development Kit (JDKTM) is a powerful development environment that is portable, object-oriented, platform independent, and especially well suited for developing Internet-enabled applications. The JDK includes the Java compiler, interpreter, classes, and documentation and is licensed to all UnixWare 7 and SCO OpenServer Release 5 licensees.

JDK 1.1.8 for SCO Operating Systems is a full update release to the earlier JDK 1.1.3, 1.1.3u, 1.1.3w, 1.1.7A, and 1.1.7B releases on SCO platforms.

This is the last release in the JDK 1.1.x series that Sun (and therefore SCO) will be making.

Compared to JDK 1.1.7B, this release contains:

  • A new bytecode optimizer in the JIT compiler, thereby improving its performance.
  • Support for building native methods with gcc and g++.
  • More flexible and performant LWP creation in native threads.
  • Fixes and enhancements corresponding to the update of the JDK from the Sun 1.1.7B level to its 1.1.8 level.
  • Fixes for a large number of SCO specific problems in JDK 1.1.7B.

Also available for download is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.1.8. This is an alternate packaging that includes only the Java interpreter, classes, just-in-time compiler, and related runtime components. It does not include development components or documentation.

JDK 1.1.8 and JRE 1.1.8 will run on the following versions of SCO operating systems:

  • UnixWare 7 Release 7.1.1
  • SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.5 and 5.0.6 (with the 7.1.1 OSRcompat package)

For more information about the supported operating systems for JDK 1.1.8 or JRE 1.1.8, see the Supported Platforms section of the JDK 1.1.8 Release Notes.
