Netscape FastTrack notes

Netscape FastTrack notes

The Netscape FastTrack Server updates and replaces the Netscape Communications Server from SCO Internet FastStart 1.0 and (if installed) the Netscape Commerce Server(TM).

Once installed, the Netscape FastTrack Server starts automatically on reboot. If an SSL certificate is installed for secure serving, starting the server requires a password, and therefore must be done manually.

To start the FastTrack Server manually, enter one of the following commands as root.

If virtual domains have NOT been enabled and a secure server is installed:

/usr/internet/ns_https/https-443/start

If virtual domains have been enabled and a secure server is installed, for each virtual domain enter (substituting the virtual domain's IP address for IPaddress):

/usr/internet/ns_https/https-443.IPaddress/start

To stop the FastTrack Server manually, enter the appropriate start command above, substituting /stop for /start.

To restart the FastTrack Server manually, enter the appropriate start command above, substituting /restart for /start.

For more information, see ``Starting and stopping the server'' in Chapter 5 of the Netscape FastTrack Administrator's Guide (noting this correction to that book: the server files have been installed in /usr/internet/ns-https for secure servers or /usr/internet/ns-httpd for non-secure servers).

Configuring FastTrack without using Internet Manager

NOTE: Configuring new servers directly with the FastTrack Administration Server may cause them to not be seen by the SCO Internet Manager.

  1. Start the Administration Server by entering:

    /usr/internet/ns_httpd/start-admin

  2. Access the Administration Server by opening this URL with any forms-capable web browser:

    http://system:620/

Replace system with the name of the local system.

  3. Log into the Administration Server as user admin.

At installation, the admin password was set to be the same as the root password.

  4. Select the server to administer.

NOTE: By default, a non-secure Netscape FastTrack Server listens on port 80 and a secure FastTrack Server listens on port 443. If there are conflicts with these ports, either modify the conflicting service or change the port on which the server listens.

  5. When you are finished, stop the Administration Server by entering:

    /usr/internet/ns_httpd/stop-admin

Log files in new location
To prevent conflicts with the old log file format, each server's log files are renamed during the update. Three standard files are used for logging: one for access messages, one for errors, and one for messages about a secure server, if one is running.

These files are named:

name.DD.MON-ftpudate
name = access, errors, or secure
DD = day of month update is installed
MON = month update is installed

For example: If the update is installed October 31st, the server using /usr/internet/ns_httpd/httpd-80 as its root directory would use these log files:

/usr/internet/ns_httpd/httpd-80/logs/access-31-Oct-ftupdate
/usr/internet/ns_httpd/httpd-80/logs/errors-31-Oct-ftupdate
