I have a Fujitsu Siemens PRIMERGY TX150-S5 Server that
has no standard legacy floppy drive attached to it. Fujitsu
Siemens now ship their PRIMERGY TX150-S5 with no legacy
floppy drive installed as default.
I am using the Server with the boot controller to be the
onboard LSI 1068 SAS and SAS HD's.
In order for me to install OpenServer 5.0.7 on this server,
I need to load the latest BTLD "lsil" driver version 1.04.09
via a USB floppy drive.
NOTE:
The latest SCO OpenServer5 "lsil" BTLD is available
at LSI website
http://www.lsi.com/files/support/ssp/fusionmpt/SCO/SCO_op5_mpt_lsil_10409.zip
or on the SCO Supplement 5 BTLD ISO Image (osr507)
http://www.sco.com/support/update/download/release.php?rid=192
When installing SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 with an additional
BTLD "lsil", the ISL boot loader will need to load the
"lsil" driver at the initial load of the Install Kernel with
the command:
boot
: defbootstr link="lsil"
Loading floppy image into memory...
Loading kernel fd(64)unix .text
Loading kernel fd(64)unix .data
Loading Kernel fd(64)unix .bss
Loading Kernel symbol table, this may take a few minutes
Please insert the fd(65)lsil volume and press <Return>
or 'q' to quit:
I have my USB Floppy drive attached and then I inserted the
"lsil" BTLD floppy disk in it and then hit <Return>.
The ISL boot loader fails to read the USB floppy with this
error message:
"Sorry, that volume does not contain the lsil package"
In other words, the ISL boot loader can't see the USB
floppy drive, hence access to it fails.
I have also tried several "defbootstr" combinations in
order for the ISL boot loader to recognize the USB Floppy
drive, but without success and continued to get the same error
message as above.
These are the "defbootstr" combinations used with no
success:
defbootstr Sflp=usb_msto(0,0,0) link="lsil"
defbootstr Sflp=usb_msto(0,0,0) btld=fd(65) link="lsil"
How can I make the Boot loader see the USB floppy drive
and access it?
HARDWARE:
Fujitsu Siemens PRIMERGY TX150-S5
CAUSE:
When you purchase the new PRIMERGY TX150-S5 servers, you
have the option to have a standard legacy Floppy Driver
1.44 MB installed, or have one without.
Fujitsu Siemens by default ship the PRIMERGY TX150-S5
without a legacy Floppy 1.44 MB Drive. Only a USB Floppy
is possible to connect to it.
Therefore, it is recommended to purchase the TX150-S5 with
an installed legacy Floppy Drive 1.44 MB. You will not have the
problem described in this Technical Article
But if you have purchased the TX150-S5 without a legacy
floppy drive installed, it has been found that if you connect
a USB Floppy drive with no floppy disk in it "empty" and boot
the server, the BIOS will not add the attached USB floppy into
its potential attached boot devices, hence you will see no
reference to any USB attached floppy device in the POST BIOS
message, like this one:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40 GHz
2096128K Extended RAM Passed
ATAPI CD-ROM: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10W
Mouse initialized
As you can see, there is no reference to any found USB Floppy
devices. When the OSr507 ISL bootloader requests access to a Floppy
drive via "fd(65)" from the BIOS, the BIOS reports that
there is no floppy drive attached and load of the BTLD via
floppy drive will fail.
But if you boot the server with a USB floppy drive attached
to it that has 1.44 MB floppy disk inserted in it, the BIOS
will detect the USB floppy drive as a potential boot device:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40 GHz
2096128K Extended RAM Passed
ATAPI CD-ROM: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10W
USB 1.1: NEC USB UF000x <--- Our USB Floppy Device
Mouse initialized
This is how the TX150-S5 BIOS works, even with the latest
BIOS upgrade. This has been reported to Fujitsu Siemens for
clarification.
