Removing TCB security database files on Version 4.2 and possible problems?
Keywords
v4 3.2 version 4.0 remove tcb files security databases root c2 rip out 4.2 insufficient authorization for attempted operation qfs login disabled terminals ripped out
Release
SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.0 -> 4.2
SCO Open Desktop Release 2.0 and 3.0

Problem
          Can I remove the TCB security databases? And what are the
          possible problems with doing so?

Solution
          The Release Notes for the above releases have a chapter called
           Security Enhancements for this release. There is a section
          called Removing security database files which state:

                It is possible to completely remove the commands and
                data files associated with the security enhancements
                in SCO UNIX System V.

          The Release Notes explain the consequences and what features
          will no longer be operable. The procedure for removing the
           security database files is also explained.

          For testing purposes before removing the actual directories
          do the following:

              1) create a file in /etc/default called 'security' with
                 one line in it, as follows:

                 TCBFILES=OFF

              2) mvdir /tcb /tcb.org
                 mvdir /etc/auth /etc/auth.org

NOTE:
          There are known problems that have been reported to engineering
          following the removal of the TCB database files.

          1) Terminals may become disabled preventing logins. A fix is
             available for this.
          2) mscreen will report error messages that can be ignored.
