1  Description

The OpenServer Kernel Personality (OKP) add-on for UnixWare 7.1.3 supports the installation of a full OpenServer application environment on UnixWare including emulation support for most Xenix applications in use with OpenServer today.  With OKP installed, OpenServer applications will run on UnixWare 7.1.3 without modification. This new feature of UnixWare is intended for current OpenServer customers who have a business need for the increased scalability and additional features which are supported by the UnixWare kernel or are looking to move to a clustered solution which is available with UnixWare and Reliant®HA.

The Lite version of OKP is a no-charge add-on for UnixWare 7.1.3 which may be used to directly migrate an existing OpenServer 5.0.4 through OpenServer 5.0.7 system along with already installed applications and data files to UnixWare.  Using OKP Lite is the fastest way to move an entire existing OpenServer system image including all currently installed applications. Once migrated additional OpenServer applications may be installed normally but the OpenServer environment itself should be considered fixed since upgrading is not currently supported.

The Full version provides a fresh OpenServer 5.0.7 image for installation on UnixWare 7.1.3.  This option is a good choice for customers who want to move a limited number of applications and also move to the latest release of OpenServer under UnixWare.  After installing the fresh OSR5.0.7 image, selected individual applications must be installed separately as they would be on an OSR5.0.7 system.  Customers choosing to use the Full version of OKP will need to obtain a license which may be ordered separately as indicated in Section 4 below.

2  Availability

Both the Lite and Full versions of OKP along with full supporting documentation are immediately available for download from the UnixWare 7.1.3 SCO Update site at: http://www.sco.com/support/update/download/uw713list.html.

Customers wishing to use the Lite version of OKP will need to download both the software and the activation key which is included on the site at no additional charge.  Customers interested in using the Full version which includes an image of OpenServer 5.0.7 will need to purchase the license activation key listed in Section 4 below.

A new CD containing both the Lite and Full versions, plus the Lite activation key will be made available in all UnixWare 7.1.3 Media Kits by 1 August 2003.

3  Product Features and Limitations

The new OpenServer Kernel Personality for UnixWare 7.1.3 provides for rapid copying and installation of existing OSR5 systems to UnixWare and provides the following features:

·         Supports migration of an OSR5.04 through OSR5.0.7 application environment or the fresh installation of an OSR5.0.7 environment.

·         Runs OpenServer applications on UnixWare 7 without modification to the applications

·         Provides binary compatibility for XENIX programs

·          In most cases, the kernel will detect a XENIX binary on execution and invoke the XENIX emulator automatically.

·         Alternately, XENIX emulation mode can be invoked from the command line

·         Provides a complete OpenServer application deployment environment that provides the system services most applications require on OpenServer 5.0.4 through 5.0.7 systems

·         The OpenServer application environment benefits directly from UnixWare reliability, scalability, and performance

·         Supports standard interprocess communication (IPC) facilities to allow OpenServer, UnixWare and LKP applications to share data

·         Supports common OpenServer installation utilities for installing OpenServer applications

·         Native support for OpenServer library functions and system calls

OKP enables OpenServer 5 applications to be deployed on UnixWare by providing the APIs, system interfaces, and application execution environment required by most OpenServer applications. Some limitations of the current version of OKP are as follows:

·         Limited OpenServer administration environment, consequently most user and administrative functions must be carried out using UnixWare interfaces

·         OpenServer scoadmin applications must be ported to use the UnixWare scoadmin interface and desktop.

·         Device interfaces are performed by the UnixWare kernel consequently native OpenServer drivers are not supported, UnixWare drivers are provided for most of the standard system peripherals that are supported on OpenServer

·         UnixWare file system types are used for OKP and during migration user data files are copied onto native filesystems thus no direct access to the HTFS and DTFS filesystem architectures is provided under OKP

4  UnixWare 7.1.3 Trade-In Promotion

Concurrent with the release of OKP for UnixWare 7.1.3, SCO is introducing special promotional pricing for selected UnixWare 7.1.3 trade-in licenses from OpenServer 5.0.4 through 5.0.7 Enterprise systems.  This promotional pricing which represents savings of $150 and $200 off current list prices is effective immediately.  These prices will remain in effect through 31 December 2003.

Customers desiring to take advantage of the promotional pricing should be sure to order trade-ins using the special model numbers provided below.
