Problem
What is Support Level Supplement (SLS) UOD419A and how
do I install it? How do I configure the Adaptec
          AHA-1540CP/1542CP card?

Solution
The attached cover letter describes the enhancements and
corrections to known problems for SCO UNIX System V found
in, and the installation procedure for, SLS UOD419A.

Dear SCO Customer,

The enclosed Support Level Supplement (SLS) UOD419A contains a
Boot-Time Loadable Driver (BTLD) for systems specifically using
the Adaptec AHA-1540CP/1542CP card with SCO Open Server Enterprise
System Release 3.0, SCO Open Server Network System Release 3.0,
SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0, SCO Open Desktop Lite Release 3.0
and SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.2.

This BTLD does NOT support the Plug and Play features on this card.
Plug and Play must be disabled in order for this card to work.

SLS UOD419A provides a new driver for the AHA1540CP/1542CP card
that keeps the installation from hanging at F12 during the hardware
initialization sequence.

For information on configuring the card see the 'CARD CONFIGURATION'
section of this letter.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

If you are about to install the xad driver, you will either be
installing one of the following products or one of the following
products will already be installed:

SCO Open Server Enterprise System Release 3.0

SCO Open Server Network System Release 3.0

      SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0

SCO Open Desktop Lite Release 3.0

SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.2

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

You must install Support Level Supplement (SLS) UOD419A when:

- installing new hardware that is required for your system at
installation time. See section I, 'USING BTLDs AT INSTALLATION TIME'.

- adding new hardware to your system after the installation of one
of the products listed in 'INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS'. In this case,
(SLS) UOD419A, the BTLD package, is treated as a package of drivers
to be added to the Link Kit by installpkg(ADM). See section II,
  'INSTALLING BTLDs AFTER THE INSTALLATION'.

I. USING BTLDs AT INSTALLATION TIME

This section describes how to install the new driver which is required
for the installation of one of the SCO products listed above. If you
need to use your BTLD disk at installation time, you should have
already inserted your N1 (boot) disk. After inserting the N1 disk,
the boot prompt is displayed; this is the point at which you begin
the installation procedure for the xad driver. At this stage the
N1 (boot) floppy disk should be in the drive, and the system should
   be displaying:

       SCO UNIX System V/386

       Boot
       :

   a. At the ``:'' prompt, enter: restart link=xad

   b. After the kernel has been loaded you will see:

Please insert the fd(x)xad volume and press <Return>:

At this point you should insert the xad floppy disk.

If the wrong volume is inserted or the drive is empty, the
       system displays the following:

Sorry, that volume does not contain the xad package

This is followed by the insertion request again:

Please insert the fd(x)xad volume and press <Return>:

The system prompts for and extracts the contents of the package.

   c. After a series of messages culminating in a message such as:

           xad: Driver "ad" successfully loaded

you will see a message prompting you to insert the N2 (filesystem)
       disk.

NOTE:
If, during the series of messages, this message is displayed, it
       can be safely ignored:

                  ... Characteristic 'h' not supported;

The BTLD package is now installed. See the installation
procedure in the appropriate operating system's installation
       guide.

II. INSTALLING BTLDs AFTER INITIAL INSTALLATION

This section describes how to install the BTLD when the system
has already been installed,

   a. Log in as root.

   b. If you have not already done so, use the following command to
bring your machine into System Maintenance mode:

           /etc/shutdown -i1

NOTE:
shutdown -i1 safely shuts down networking services before
allowing you to enter System Maintenance mode. For more
information on the shutdown command, see the shutdown(ADM)
       manual page.

   c. At the system prompt, enter installpkg.

   d. You will see the following messages:

           Confirm

           Please insert the floppy disk.

           Strike ENTER when ready
           or ESC to stop.

Insert the requested disk containing the required driver packages
       and press <Enter>.

   e. After a message informs you that installation is in progress, the
system lists all the packages on this BTLD disk and prompts you for
your required package(s) on a screen display similar to this:

The following packages are on this disk:

           NAME DESCRIPTION
xad Driver for Adaptec 1542CP including support for > 1Gb
                  capacity disks.

Please enter the names of the packages you
wish to install, or q to quit:

       Enter "xad" at the prompt.

       Then it will display:

There is already a ad installed.
Do you want to replace it with the version of ad? (y/n/q)

       Enter "y" at the prompt.

   f. To make use of the drivers, relink the kernel by entering
this command at the system prompt:

           /etc/conf/cf.d/link_unix

You will then be asked whether you want the new kernel to boot by
default and whether you want the kernel environment to be rebuilt.
       Answer yes to both questions.

The installation procedure is now complete.

   g. To activate the new kernel, reboot the system.
